I truly feel a lot of the chaos that has been happening in the fashion space is due to these 3 things: over exposure, true cost of producing clothing and over consumption. I will expand on this thought in the new year but it’s been percolating in my mind.

This year as part of my practice, I’m going to be spending more time on education - starting with underwear, socks, bras all the way to our outer most layer with outerwear. I truly feel like we’ve forgotten so many small details about clothing and it’s making everyone’s life difficult because we’re expecting articles of clothing to perform in ways they aren’t constructed to perform and then if feels like we’ve wasted our money.

Award season is just around the corner and I will be continuing my tradition with my red carpet commentary on instagram! It’s so much fun getting to interact with all of you and critique these gowns ( and suits). There are a lot of awards shows but I focus on highlighting the main ones - although if I see an interesting dress or suit from a smaller award show I will share my thoughts. See schedule below:

She’s back again and ready to step into a new season - but wait nothing is new?

Now please explain to me why I’m seeing influencers and trend forecasters alike talking about what is trending this fall and its “collegiate”, “chunky sweaters”, “riding boots” like BFFR!!!! I’m going to let you in on a not so secret secret - what is trending for fall is what was trending last year, 5 years ago and decades ago! See some examples below:

Layer a chunky sweater over a dress, try wearing that sporty skirt you haven’t worn in 3 years with some cute loafers. Another option, would be changing up your accessories - if you normally wear dainty necklaces and earrings, try something a little larger. Add a bandana or a scarf as a belt or skirt over pants.

As we’re on the “what we’re not buying” wave what are these! (image below- stirrup tights) I have to agree with the poster, these never look right on 95% of bodies - I wish these designers would leave some things in the drafts. However, if they want to bring back the American Apparel (RIP) riding pants-we can definitely talk.

Hard pivot but I had asked on my insta stories if anyone had underwear/brands they’d recommend and barely anyone had suggestions but plenty of people asked for recommendations. I purchased organic stretch cotton bikini cut underwear from the GAP, in black and I can report they are good basic underwear. Not my favourite but get the job done (no wedgies) regular price $14.95 CAD/undie. As the story goes, once your phone knows you’re looking for something you get a ton of ads - one ad caught my attention which was Huha, a Canadian mineral underwear brand. I purchased 5 pairs of underwear ($28CAD/undie) in the high rise bikini cut. I can say that these feel really soft and comfortable. It's only been a month so, I can’t say how the minerals factor in but they are great undies.

I want to take a moment to remind everyone that sustainable fashion is super simple - wear what you already own. Are items too long or too wide? Have you considered a tailor/seamstress to take the item in? Depending on the item, you could remove the sleeves to make the item more versatile. By simply hemming the pants or dress you’re making the item more functional and you’re able to wear it regularly rather than it gathering dust in your closet or waiting for an event where you’ll be wearing heels. I’ve done this with a number of items here are 2 examples:

Following the care instructions is also a key piece to keeping your clothes (no matter the brand and fabric makeup) looking good and useful longer. For all things holy or precious in this world - do not put any type of wool (cashmere/merino), silk, linen, denim etc. in the dryer! For your woollens, after gently hand washing or using the gentle cycle on your machine, lay the sweater on a towel and roll the towel and sweater up to get rid of excess water and lay flat to dry. I would use this method for the above mentioned fabrics too.

Late October preview:

With all of the tariffs levied against Canada and the 51st state rhetoric, for Canadian readers you’ve probably been triple checking the shipping and duties and origins (from the US) of most of your purchases. As we move into holiday season - Canadian thanksgiving is 3 weeks away (where is time going) to save money/make sure you get the items that you want - scoping out other Canadian brands to support will save you on the foreign exchange and shipping. Welcome to Sprezzatura Quarterly Spring/Summer - mainly summer at this point! 

So much has happened since I last typed lol but here we are. Since we last spoke our neighbours to the south have continued on their deranged spiral and ignited the type of nationalism only reserved for Canada in international Hockey tournaments. With this nationalism a flurry of Buy Canadian has possessed all of my social media. From a styling/fashion perspective its highlighted a number of things:

1. There are a ton of local brands that I’ve found and look forward to shopping from

2. There are a lot of Canadian brands that I had never heard of 

3. Across the country plus size sizing seems to be a continued gap

4. Some of our biggest brands rely on US customers to keep going

5. Some of my favourite Canadian brands have closed this year

The Canadian fashion eco-system is in danger!  However, it's complex and I’m not going to lie overwhelming to think of and even create possible solutions. I will say as a consumer your favourite small brand can't survive if you only shop there on sale. On top of this with the economy shaking like jello, it's only a matter of time before people severely cap their spending on fashion which brings me to my next thoughts.

Developing a personal style and being a discerning shopper are more important now than ever! I find summer can be a great time to experiment with your style as it's a short time frame and there are lots of accessories you can play with - sunhats/hats, sunglasses, shoes, scarves, bags etc. If you’re into thrifting and consignment excluding shoes these are easy to find for a really reasonable price.  Example: Scarves!

I also feel like summer style is easier to personalize as you have basic silhouettes that you can play with tee-shorts combo, all the dresses, skirts + tank/tee, linen or cotton sets.

Being discerning is a bit more challenging as it takes time to develop the skill but here are some quick tips:

1. Don’t impulse buy!

2. Have a list of clothes and accessories you want overall and focus on those items.

3. Think about how these items fit into your current wardrobe.

 On Nostalgia - this is one fashion trope that I’m very over! Are there no new ideas? I feel like everyone is pulling on nostalgia (80s/Y2K/2000s) instead of imagining something different. At first I thought it was just laziness but I’ve been thinking maybe it's a lack of imagination for something different. In order to have imagination you have to live life and experience different things. Given the pace in which everyone is living (the hustle and bustle of life) - even the couture houses are moving at such a fast pace when do you get to truly be creative or innovative?

Summer Dressing

When it comes to summer dressing I only have a few rules,

1. You should be comfortable - nothing should be pinching you or you pulling it down to adjust.

2. Light breathable fabrics or fabric blends

3. No shame or hiding yourself be FREEE

On #2 Light and Breathable fabrics

 The best fabrics for summer are Linen and Cotton hands down. A plus is that they are both accessible. Pros: Both are light and breathable, Cons: wrinkly and will get wet when you sweat.  You can get both at different price ranges but the easiest way to spot cheap linen is by how rough it feels. Better quality linen should feel softer and smoother and the best quality linen can feel as soft as silk. For more details see Linen and Cotton.

I’m sure as you’ve been shopping you have come across Tencel aka Lyocell, Viscose and Cupro. I would say these are semi-natural fibres as they are made from plant fibres but may be treated with chemical treatments. In terms of breathability I’ve found Tencel/lyocell and viscose to be good but from my friends that are more sweaty they disliked viscose.

For the sweaty people I would lean into more technical fabrics like what is used in gymwear as your base - body suits, bras, panties, tank tops, tshirts. Moisture wicking and drying fabrics like used in gymwear will keep you from feeling wet and gross in the hot weather. Then you can wear the cute blouse//top/dress on top. OR you can embrace the sweaty (not musty) and live your life in perfectly wrinkled linens and cotton looks.

There are 3 categories that I’ve split up for different industries:

1. Traditional (suits): Lawyers, Consultants, Accountants, Media on-air personalities, Investment Banking: you’re wearing suits in black, grey, navy white dress shirt, appropriate shoes.

2. Medium (dress for your day/ business casual): Advertising, Engineering, Government, Banking, Teaching, Real Estate, Banking might even be traditional depending on the bank - dress pants/blouse, suits, skirts - knee length, suit dresses/dresses knee length.

3. Casual (no ripped jeans or shorts over the knee): Tech, marketing, smaller companies.

These are pretty wide categories so I’m sure I haven’t listed every industry but hopefully this gives you a good idea on how to choose your outfits for your new job!

Winter has been wintering this year. If you're in Toronto or many parts of Canada, we got a ton of snow. The blanket of snow was so much fun and infected me with a childish glee. 

The winter uniform of Torontonians and to an extent other Canadians is a black parka (with fur around the hood) and good boots of any brand - Columbia, Rudsak, Wuxly, Sorrel, Ugg winter boots, Kamik, etc. It reminds me of several years ago when André Leon Talley had come to Toronto via AGO for the screening of the film “The Gospel According to André Leon Talley” which had a Q&A session. Someone in the audience asked him what he thought of  Toronto fashion (lmaooo) - he was diplomatic but said he found the number of parkas fascinating.

This made me reflect on why everyone has a black parka for the most part. After an afternoon of pondering and observing on the streetcar on my way to work, I realized It's pretty simple. We get minus 20 days regularly which means you need a good parka. Good parkas are at the least $300CAD and you need it for a long time. A black parka just makes sense - you can play with the style but not have to worry about it being out of date and it's easy to clean too. However, this doesn’t let everyone off the hook with those dismal dull winter accessories - y’all need to start  incorporating some colourful scarves, mittens and hats!

Thinking of Andre Leon Talley leads me to how wonderful Black History Month was this year! I saw so many posts about Black History that went beyond the standard fair, people other than myself posting about Black Canadian History. The Grammy’s actually awarded the correct people - shout out to Béyonce, Doechii and Kendrick. Then Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles won the Super Bowl, plus reading kids books about Black-History to lil chicken; I get warm fuzzies just thinking about it!

I’m going to take a minute to vent - I want Black-owned brands to succeed and they can’t do that by simply being a Black-owned brand. The product has to be good - whatever the category it's in. For fashion/style I find that the options are on a wide spectrum. Personally, I don’t need another graphic t-shirt and streetwear isn’t my style. On the other end we have brands like Christoper John Rogers which I love (they are my style) but the cost is steep! I wish there was more of an in-between, especially in Canada.

As we venture closer to false spring we’ll be in the below zero (Celsius) one day a plus 10 the next day, this is a reminder to not put away your winter stuff just yet. March is historically the month of snow-rain mixes and general slush. This is where layering is your friend. Now one of the downsides to layering can be that bulky feeling - which I despise. This is where I will recommend my favourite layering pieces - Uniqlo Heattech. 

From the tank tops to long sleeves they are my favourite for layering. They keep you very warm and make layering a breeze because the pieces are fairly thin. Also they last forever! I’ve had my 2 heat-tech tank tops, long sleeve scoop neck and faux turtleneck for over 6 years and they are in great shape, colour hasn’t faded and they are just as warm as when I first purchased them.

As I write this, it’s September 1st. A bright lovely day with the perfect amount of breeze, creating a moment to savour for the remaining days of summer.

Gazing out over the Toronto skyline in the park I notice something immediately - numerous pairs of Adidas sambas, the shoe of the summer in various colours. To the left of me a group of 3 friends are chatting and I ask to take a picture of their shoes lol for proof.

When I was thinking about summer trends earlier this year I thought sambas were a mainly online trend seen mainly on TikTok and Instagram but seeing them all over in real life (IRL) was oddly comforting. A trend that actually stuck! Conversely, my trend forecast of drop waist dresses was seen all over the internet but I didn’t see anyone wearing them IRL. Based on social media London and New York had this trend covered and paired with sambas of course!

I’m not sure if there is a word for this specific experience but it explains why fashion overall feels so haphazard. We’re exposed to every trend at such a rapid pace that it’s jarring in IRL to see what is actually being worn and by whom. It looks quite strange sometimes seeing the mishmash of 90s, 00’s super baggy pants, tiny tops and low rise jeans plus all of the TikTok micro trends. There isn’t anything inherently wrong with following trends because trends can help you expand your palette in whatever style wheelhouse you play in - it’s just alot. I will emphasize that to be stylish you need to lean into things that you truly love and not what you think you should wear. This can put you at odds with what is currently popular but you’ll never really be out of style. Being your authentic self in building your style is the only way to truly be stylish.

Reflecting on my summer it was quite busy now that I have a 1 year old. Mainly our families and friends wanted to see lil chicken and we enjoyed our time together. I was really pleased with my style this summer. I wasn’t wearing my silks as much but everything fit well and looked great in photos so I’d say it was a win-win. Our first international trip was interesting - mainly we caught covid the 1st week of a 2 week trip so it was a bit much.

“September is moving like they have somewhere to be” - a wise twitter user

Its now officially fall and so far my light trench coat is too heavy for the current Toronto weather which is 20 degrees celsius but humid, so sweaters over the shoulders or tied at the waist are doing the heavy lifting for the cool mornings.

As you start putting away some of your key summer items and look to your fall wardrobe, I want to assure you that you probably have a number of classic fall items that you can style beautifully. If I see another video stating that “turtlenecks and burgundy are trending for fall 2024” I’ll probably eat my burgundy purse.

As your favourite stylist let me give you the ingredients for a great fall look that applies to everyone (women, men, gays and they’s):

• A great pair of boots

• A good sweater or cardigan or both for layering

• Denim (jeans, dresses, skirts, tops etc,.)

• Corduroy (trousers, dresses, skirts, tops etc,.)

• Scarves (silk, wool, silk-wool blend, modal, cotton, bandanas etc,.)

• Hats (baseball, beret, paperboy, beanie, etc,.)

• Colours: burgundy, dark green, orange, black, white, navy, brown, tan

  

• Patterns: plaid, houndstooth, animal print, paisley, buffalo check

All of these items are easily accessible whether your like thrifting, consignment, shopping online, or at the mall, a boutique or borrowing from someone dear to you.  I’m sharing my fall mood board for some inspiration and vibes. Hey y’all, this is the first edition of my newsletter, Sprezzatura Quarterly. Sprezzatura is an Italian word that means "a certain nonchalance, so as to conceal all art and make whatever one does or says appear to be without effort and almost without any thought about it” a.k.a. effortless/effortlessly chic.

In fashion one of the unspoken goals is to appear effortlessly chic and in this space we’ll work towards that. Of course we’ll be talking style from underwear to wool coats.

I’m not sure where you live but here in Toronto we’ve experienced a grey and wet winter, so naturally we’re ready for the sunshine and warm weather. Before we can truly enjoy the spring/summer season ahead there is some housekeeping to do.  I’m talking about your often neglected underwear and sock drawer. You can’t tell me that you don’t have underwear hanging out that is too big or too small or falling apart. Same with the socks, if you have holes in your socks, just let them go in peace. When you’re wearing nice underwear you feel all kinds of good and sexy, maybe even playful?! It's a small - almost secret indulgence

Now you’ve gotten rid of all those undies, what next? First measure yourself to get your current underwear size. Sizing for underwear is 2 measurements of your waist and hip.

For basic but very comfortable underwear my first stop is aerie - I love their bikini cut undies! Parade has great quality and fun colours and plus sizing that goes up to 5XL. A good middle brand is Mary Young, they have some great functional and sexy pieces. If you’re looking for sexier pieces a good place to start is Fleur de Mal or your local specialty bra-lingerie shop.

I’ve talked about this dress A LOT. By removing the sleeves, this dress went from mid-life crises to “we outside”! Here are 3 ways I’ll be styling it from spring to summer:

• Black leather Jacket - Seeing as the weather is still cold, I decided to pair this dress with a leather jacket, leather knee-high boots and cute croc bag.

• Tan trench coat - For a casual lunch or coffee with a cool breeze. Unlined trench, converse, and everyday bag. I like that the socks are a similar colour way so they work well peeking out over the sneaker. 

• With the white Telfy - Going to a party! Unbuttoned with a sexy bra underneath, paired with a thick necklace, gold rings, bracelet stack, chain belt and a matching white bag and shoe.

Trend alert: drop-waist and basque waist dresses. They are so cute, come in a variety of styles and look good on all body types - example 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Full disclosure, before trying the Dr. Barbara Sturm Darker Skintones Discovery Kit ($150 CAD)  my skin was in good shape. This was merely curiosity on my part for trying these products. Here are a couple details that I want to share before beginning my review:

• Skin Type: Normal to Combination (Normal in the summer and dry forehead in the winter)

• Skin Issues: none at the moment but previously had hormonal acne on my chin and jaw

• Skin Tone: Dark (Makeup shades - Pat McGrath Foundation #31 and Fenty Beauty Foundation 430)  

The Darker Skintones discovery kit comes with a Foam Cleanser (50ml), Enzyme Cleanser (20g), Hyaluronic Serum (10ml), Face Cream (20ml), and Face Cream Rich (20ml). I used this kit for 6 weeks starting on July 5th, 2020. Out of this kit the best products in my opinion are the cleansers. The foam cleanser has a light fragrance of “fresh” and is gentle and soft on my face. The enzyme cleanser is a finely milled powder that you add drops of water to and creates a paste. This is a physical exfoliator which most people have moved away from in favour of chemical exfoliants. Personally I really liked this exfoliator, it didn't feel rough on the skin and my face didn’t feel stripped. For me, the hyaluronic serum was average on my skin. It did what it was supposed to do but my skin didn’t feel more hydrated than usual. I also found the face creams to be good but average.

My overall impression is that this is a solid skincare line if you don't have any specific skin issues, like hyperpigmentation or texture. The real downsides for me is the pricing and the lack of any difference in my skin. The discovery kit cost $150 CAD pre-tax, for the full sized foam cleanser (150ml) you’re paying $90 CAD and for the full sized hyaluronic serum (50ml) you’re $390 CAD, this is to illustrate that this is luxury skincare and unless you have the coins I don’t believe it is worth it. I didn’t experience any change in my skin since using these products. Which is great that I didn’t have a negative reaction but also disappointed, as I assumed that these luxury products would give me more glowing skin etc.

I discovered this brand when they originally came out with their leak proof underwear. While I don’t use the leak proof undies as my main period underwear they are great for light days. Currently my favourite product is the thigh saver shorts 6”. These shorts have been great this summer when wearing dresses. Also their regular underwear is great in the summer because the fabric they use is moisture wicking which is really important when it’s hot and humid.

This time last year I was in Las Vegas with my girls  kicking off hot girl summer for our 30th Birthdays! It was soo much fun and I’m so grateful that we got to have that experience. This picture is from our first dinner in Vegas at Catch.

Back then vs Now

I’ve been listening to a ton of BSB today and I couldn’t  help but think about how much I loved them as a kid. I remember all of their outfits which were of the time. They all had their own personalities which I think played a role in some of their styling like AJ being the “bad boy” and Nick being the heartthrob.

Normally I’d be buying tickets to numerous Caribana events and asking my friends which fetes we’re reaching. Instead I’m looking at last year’s pictures and hoping for a distance Caribana party in the park? Can someone make that happen?

I’m wearing a pink bodysuit and pull on pleated tangerine pants. An easy and comfortable look to pull off. I love pleats in general and I find that pleats are easy to dress up and down.

A great starting point is B Corporation Certification/B Corp certified. Certified B Corporations are  businesses that meet the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. 

The B Corp assessment process measures a company’s performance in five categories: governance, workers, customers, community, and the environment. Companies must document their positive impact to qualify and undergo verification every three years to maintain their Certification.

As of 2018, there are more than 2,500 B Corps in 130 industries and 60 countries around the world.

This is really a LaKeith Stanfield appreciation post lol. Whoever his agent is I need then in my life because in the last couple of years Stanfield has been booked and busy. Each project he acted in was different from the other from ‘Uncut Gems’ to ‘The Photograph’.

Stanfield is quirky, cool, and handsome (and I can’t say anything else because I’m married lol)

One of the few stores in the mall that has great quality clothing, shoes, and accessories. I had been looking for boots on my lunch (if you work in the PATH you know) and I decided to pop-in their Eaton centre store. Long story short I bought some great boots that I still have. I also really like that they are a sustainable brand from the fabrics that they use to the tags to the packaging. They are also a certified B corporation (more to come on this next week). 

Now I personally will not be going to any restaurants but you can find me in a park having socially distanced brunch with my peeps ✌🏾.

Stuurman is an artist (multi-talented) that I found through his amazing clothing design collaborations [Insert pick of jidenna from GQ in floral set]. While his clothing design work is superb his visual art talent is incredible, if you scroll through his instagram page its like walking through an art gallery. He’s worked with Nelson Mandela, Beyonce and Jay-Z, and Barack Obama to name a few. 

What I love about his style is the colour, texture and impeccable tailoring. His artistry is reflected in his work and clothing and I’m a FAN!
